Ciel Bergman is an American post-modern painter of Swedish origin. She focuses on the environment as well as feminine consciousness.
Bergman was the recipient of a Society for the Encouragement of the Creative Arts SECA Art Award in Painting from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial of American Art as Cheryl Bowers.
Bergman is a decidedly unique feminist artist who dealt with beauty and femininity in a radical, political way. In the interview, she talks about the purpose of her work as an artist, describes being in Beijing in the Garden of Tranquillity where she had a transformative experience. She was told that her work as an artist is to make work which is healing, "Beauty has power, that's why it has been suppressed."
