Joy Harjo is a Mvskoke poet, musician, activist, and author. Harjo’s poetry, books and plays include themes such as defining self, the arts, justice, among others. Harjo uses the oral tradition and believes the “written text is fixed orality.” Harjo was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowships in 1978, 1998, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas in 1995.
